Monitor your roof

A roof leak can appear at any time, check up on your roof from time to time to ensure it is properly shingled and not damaged. Check the walls and trim under the roof for any signs of damage, paying careful attention to areas below the eaves of pitched roofs. All roofs are designed to be water resistant, not water proof.

A common cause of roof damage is hail or wind. After major storms check your roof, siding and other exterior components of the home. If you cannot see all the sections of the roof, consider calling a reputable roofer or inspector to evaluate the condition of your roof. Be extremely cautious if you choose to climb the roof yourself.

Another option for checking for roof leaks is observe the sheathing from the attic if visible. Any areas that are moist or stained could show active moisture penetration.
